BUILDING DEPARTMENT UPDATE

The NEW Code "The Building Code of New York State" will be in effect starting January 1, 2003 in its entirety. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, contact ICBO at 1-800-284-4406 or www.icbo.org. There have been many changes with this code.

The Building Department of the Town of Kent enforces New York State Building Codes and Regulations and the local Code of the Town.

Enforcement of these codes includes reviewing applications, drawings and specifications for obtaining permits for all types of construction, including work on new and existing residential and commercial structures.

This processing includes monitoring of the construction through specific inspections and interfacing with all other county and state agencies, ultimately providing for compliance and occupancy.

The services of the building department include:

  • Processing of applications for building permits.
  • Inspections for building permits and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for completed construction.
  • Enforcement of the NYCRR (New York Code of Rules and Regulations), the Building Code
  • Referrals of applications to the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Department, where appropriate.
  • House Numbering
  • Unsafe Buildings
  • Litter
  • Flood Damage Prevention
  • Plumbing
  • Site Plan Review
The building department works in cooperation with the Putnam County Health Department, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and county inspectors for plumbing and electrical work, in its review of building plans for permits and construction.

While the term "construction" as used here is broad and general, residents and contractors are advised and encouraged to contact the Building Department for assistance regarding specific information that may be applicable to their individual requirements.

The Fire Code of NY State — states that all new homes and existing homes must have their house number on them.
Shall be a minimum of 4" high, with a minimum stroke width of 0.5".
This house number must be installed prior to any type of certificates of occupancy to be issued.
